How to make fondant for cake at home within 15 minutes

Fondant is a dough like sugar paste. It is of very smooth texture and can very easily be rolled over on a cake.

We can make fondant for cake at home or buy it. 

We can decorate this type of cake very easily and also these are available in multiple colors as per our choice.

Fondant cakes can last for a longer time compared to cream cake.

In this blog I am going to share, how we can make fondant and also how to design cake using fondant.

How to make fondant for cake at home

Ingredients are :

Icing sugar – 1 cup

Water – 8 tablespoon

Sugar – 3 tablespoon

Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon

Lemon juice – ¼ teaspoon

Butter – ½ teaspoon

Preparation of Homemade fondant cake

Step 1. First step is to prepare corn syrup for this. Take 3 tablespoons of sugar and add 6 tablespoons of water then boil it for sometime.

Step 2. Once this liquid is thickened add ¼ teaspoon of lemon juice to this and continue to boil it.

Step 3. Turn off the flame and let it cool down. During this time it will become a little more thick and sticky.

Step 4 :  Next step is to prepare butter mix for this. Take ½ teaspoon of butter and add 2 tablespoons of water into it and mix it well.

Note: Make sure to take warm water.

Step 5 : Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to this mix so it gets a good flavor.

Step 6 : Take one cup of icing sugar in a bowl and filter the icing sugar once.

Note : Icing sugar can be prepared at home using 2 ingredients .

Making process of icing sugar:

  • We need 1 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of corn flour.
  • Add 1 cup of sugar and corn flour into the mixer jar and blend it well until it becomes a fine powder.
  • Grind it little by little.
  • Now sieve it through a filter and transfer to it an airtight glass bottle.

Note : why we do this process is to avoid lumps. Also if you are someone who bake cakes regularly you can make icing sugar in more quantity and save it for late. this will help you in saving time while you bake.

Step 7 : Add the butter mix and corn syrup to this bowl and mix well.

Note : Make sure to add the butter mix in portions.

Step 8 : Next step is to make this into a dough.

Note : if it is sticky add little corn flour to the dough.

Step 9 : Wrap this dough and keep it in an airtight container for a minimum of 6 hours before using it.

How to cover the cake with fondant

Here I am using color fondant to cover the cake. I already prepared a cake to cover with the fondant.

Before we start we need a turntable, scissors, fondant measuring mat, rolling pin and pizza cutter .

Step 1 : The Fondant that we buy will be hard. We need to knead it before we can use it.

Step 2 : Once it is soft you can start rolling it until it is flat.

Step 3 : Once the size of the fondant is more than the total length of base and side of the cake.

Step 4 : Now place the cake on the turntable and cover the cake using the fondant.

Step 5 : Once you cover make sure you do not have any folds.

Step 6 : Now use a fondant smoother to smoothen the surface and side.

Step 7 : Using the pizza cutter to remove the excess fontand.

Step 8 : clean the base using a tissue paper to remove any excess butter cream.

How to store fondant cakes ? Can we store fondant cakes in fridge.

Here I am explaining how I store the fondant cakes.

Tip 1 : Don’t keep the fondant cakes open in the fridge since the moisture can get into the cake.

Tip 2 : Cover the cake properly and keep it inside the fridge.

Tip 3 : Make sure that we use an airtight container. You should always use a cardboard box as it will absorb the water content easily.

Tip 4 : Make sure that the fridge cooling is low .

Tip 5 : Once we take the cake from the fridge, do not open the box until the cakes come down to room temperature. (It will take 30 to 45 minutes )

Tip 7 : Once the cake comes down to room temperature you can place the cake under a fan, this will help to absorb any water content on the cake.

Semi fondant cake recipe

Here I am going to share chocolate cake with ganache and semi fondant decorations.

Step 1 : Take a bowl, add 1 cup of flour and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to it. Add  ¼ teaspoon of baking powder and baking soda into the mix and stir it well. Just keep aside for some time.

Note : After adding these ingredients you should filter dry ingredients at least 2 times. It will help to avoid lumps.

Step 2 : Next step is, Take a cake tin and spread the butter and place the butter paper down. You can place the butter paper on the sides.

Step 3 : Take a jar, add 3 eggs to this and blend it well until it is fluffy.

Step 4 : Add vanilla extract and powdered sugar to it.

Step 5 : Add 3 tablespoons of sunflower oil and stir it slowly.


Step 6 : Add all the dry ingredients to this mix and fold it well.

Step 7 : In this mix, we can add ¼ cup of warm milk into the mix.

Step 8 : Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar and mix it properly.

Step 9 : Take a non-stick pan and keep it on the stove. Make sure that the flame is medium or low. 

Step 10 :  Place a ring or any stand on the plate. If you place the cake pan directly on the plate, the cake may get over-baked.

Step 11 : Close the non-stick lid and heat it on a medium flame for 10 minutes.(this is a preheat process)

Step 12 : Finally, Pour this batter into the cake tin and tap well.

Step 13 : Place the cake pan inside the non-stick pan and cover the pan lid. The flame should be medium or low. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes.

Step 14 : Remove the lid and you can insert a clean toothpick to check the cake while it’s baking. If the toothpick is clean after inserting, it means the cake is properly cooked.

Now the chocolate cake is ready.

Step 15 : Cut the cake into 3 equal layers. Add sugar syrup on the first layer of cake. 

Step 16 : Add whipping cream on the cake and spread some chocolate cream on the cake. Place the next layer cake and spread sugar syrup, whipping cream and spread some chocolate cream on the cake. Repeat the same step.

Step 17 : To prepare chocolate ganache for cake. Take a bowl and add chocolates and double boil it until they are melted. Let it cool for some time and once cooled, keep it in the fridge for 2 to 3 hours.

Step 18 : Take out the ganache and apply on the top and sides of the cake.

Step 19 : Take the fondant for cake and you can start rolling it until it is flat.

Step 20 : You can use any shape tool for decorating the cake like flower, doll, etc.

Step 21 : Now place the cake on the turntable and decorate the cake using the fondant.

Fondant cake is smooth and silky and this type of cakes are very sweet.

Fondant cakes are heavier than the other cream cakes.

There are different shapes with which you can cut the fondant which are available in the market or online platforms (like flower, star,circle etc..)

The fondant can be moulded into any shapes and size as per the requirement.

Even Though fondant cakes are easy to design and are eye-catching, not many people like eating them since they are super high in calories.

This is when you can try semi fondant options. 

Some people like fondant cake and other people like cream depends on the personal choice preference. I like both cakes as well.
